How To Correct Your Golf Posture

November 19, 2022

In one of our previous blogs we talked about standing too far away from the ball, and that you should try standing closer.

What if you physically find it difficult to stand closer to the ball?  Are you aware of your posture on a daily basis?

Many people are not conscious of their daily posture. They slouch when they sit and are hunched over their smartphones with their heads thrust forward. They tend to collapse into their core. They stand with their feet far apart out like a duck, leaning and shifting their weight to one side so they can keep their dominant side free for action. Not too lively looking!

Here are a few problems caused by poor everyday posture:

- overly tight, shortened hip flexor muscles which tug your upper body forward

- overly tight chest muscles which pull your shoulders forward, causing rounded shoulders

- weakened core muscles which encourages even more slumping, collapsing your chest, rib cage and core

- cellulite, arthritis in the joints, plantar fasciitis, ankle problems and restless leg syndrome

- headaches, shoulder issues, back pain, joint pain.

Now let’s look at how poor daily posture affects your golf swing. It causes the stronger areas of your body to compensate for the weaker ones, which then results in changes to how you move. For golfers, this can lead to poor mobility, less consistency and potential injury. Basically, you feel bad, move bad and play bad! Any of these below sound like you?

- Weak core strength...which affects your ability to transfer power from your legs and the ground to the upper body and club head, you can’t use your pelvis properly.

- Back pain…which impacts your ability to maintain proper spine angle during the swing, often causing you to move up and down rather than turning. The result is poor contact, loss of power and more pain!

- Tight hamstrings…which make it difficult to have an effective address position and limits hip rotation.- Poor hip mobility…which causes poor swing sequence, lower back pain and loss of power.

- Tight back and shoulders…which lead to decreased trunk rotation, limits the ability to turn and pivot on backswing properly, causing loss of power and low back strain.

- Poor posture pretty much affects the entire body and your golf swing. And these postural issues don’t occur overnight.

The biggest physical challenge faced by golfers entering their 40s and 50s has to do with the posture they’ve developed over their lifetime. It’s easy to see how poor posture has many negative impacts on your golf swing and overall health.
